Diet Quality and Nutrition

Increasing U.S. consumption of fruits and vegetables has been a major theme of dietary guidelines for over a decade. A diet rich in fruits and vegetables is associated with higher intakes of key nutrients and fewer calories per serving than other foods.  Food choices are influenced not only by prices and income, but also by family structure, time constraints, psychological factors, nutritional information, and food and nutrition assistance programs, such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly the Food Stamp Program). WASHINGTON — In a rare display of bipartisanship, Congress gave final approval Tuesday to a nearly $1-trillion farm bill, a hard-fought compromise that sets policy over agricultural subsidies, nutrition programs and the food stamp safety net for the next five years.   The Senate approved the measure, 68-32, as a cross-section of farm-state senators from both parties fought back opposition from budget hawks and some liberals to send the bill to the White House for President Obama’s signature. It easily passed the House last week.   “As with any compromise, the farm bill isn’t perfect — but on the whole, it will make a positive difference not only for…
Children who eat a healthy breakfast have not only improved overall health and well-being, but a better chance at a positive academic future.   New studies show that children who go without a good morning meal suffer from more health conditions and have poor attendance and graduation rates.   That’s why it is vital that all our local schools operate a successful school breakfast program. After all, for many children, the breakfast and lunch they eat at school are the only guaranteed meals they’ll get each day.   Nutrition advocates and hunger relief organizations around the country are encouraging schools…

Door to Door Direct Dairy Delivery

Whether it is poured over your favorite cereal, added to your morning coffee or mixed in a recipe for the best- tasting muffins or mac and cheese, milk is something the majority of us have in our refrigerator. Yet, while milk is a key ingredient in many recipes, and is the top food source for calcium, Vitamin D, potassium, and six other nutrients that promote strong bones and teeth, the cost is often a barrier for our neighbors in need. The cost of milk also makes it tough for our network feeding programs to offer milk to hungry neighbors on…
Since 2009, the Greater Chicago Food Depository has been hosting AmeriCorps members through the AmeriCorps State/National Program. The individuals are placed at the Food Depository or in member agencies and are utilized to assist with day-to-day pantry operations, community volunteer recruitment and retention, fundraising and nutrition and health education. The following post is an update from AmeriCorps member Tamara Jordan, who is currently serving on the Food Depository’s SNAP Outreach Team, focusing on veteran outreach. In 2006 I made a decision that would change my life. I joined the Army National Guard. I was an honor student at Hyde Park…

Advocacy Update January 2014

For the past few months, a conference committee made up of members of the U.S. House and Senate has been meeting to construct a Farm Bill that would be agreed upon by both full chambers. The Senate is expected to vote on the measure later this week or early next week. If the Senate approves the plan, and President Barack Obama signs it into law, the SNAP cut…
