Grain for Good Pilot Program Launches this Harvest Season

Feeding Illinois is proud to introduce its latest initiative, the “Grain for Good” (G4G) pilot program, a collaborative effort designed to combat food insecurity in Illinois. This innovative program encourages local farmers to donate a portion of their grain harvests, the proceeds of which will be used to purchase pork from Illinois hog farmers. The pork will then be distributed to local food pantries by Feeding Illinois food banks, ensuring that the food donations directly benefit families in the farmers’ own communities.

The G4G program is being launched in partnership with Grainland Farmers, the Illinois Pork Producers Association, the Illinois Association of Meat Processors, and a host of statewide agricultural organizations. It will focus on the rural counties of Woodford, Logan, LaSalle, Marshall, and Tazewell, aiming to raise $50,000 in grain donations to feed over 23,000 people, including 5,500 children. The goal is to ensure local resources are used to directly support neighbors in need, building stronger, more resilient communities.

“This pilot program builds on the success of our Bushels for Hunger initiative and amplifies the generosity of local farmers,” says Steve Ericson, Executive Director of Feeding Illinois. “The partnership between farmers, food processors, and food banks highlights the spirit of community support and collaboration. We’re excited to make a tangible impact on hunger in these counties.”

Jennifer Tirey, Executive Director of the Illinois Pork Producers Association, adds, “The Grain for Good program exemplifies the best of Illinois agriculture and local generosity. By partnering with Feeding Illinois, we can provide safe, nutritious protein to families in need while continuing to support our local farmers. This program not only helps alleviate food insecurity but also fosters a sense of community and shared responsibility.”

Farmers and community members are encouraged to participate in the Grain for Good program by donating a portion of their grain crops or contributing financially to the initiative. This program emphasizes the importance of local engagement, reminding everyone that their contributions will make a direct impact on their neighbors.
